Hugo Spritz

by Camilla Ridley

This refreshing, low-alcohol sparkling wine cocktail with a gentle, floral flavour and a hint of herbaceous mint is the perfect tipple to enjoy on a warm weekend.

I recently learnt how to make this drink at the rooftop bar in a Florence hotel, and so in my mind it will always have a distinctively Italian feel. But with over 290 million views on TikTok, the Hugo spritz is widely regarded as the drink of summer 2023. And this is hardly surprising given its elegant and refreshing flavour, and the fact that it's comparatively low alcohol, making it easy to drink in the heat and on trend in todays more abstemious times. It's also a doddle to make. And whether you’re hosting an elegant soirée or enjoying more casual drinks with loved ones, there are a few simple things you can do to really set your Hugo spritz apart.

For each glass you will need:

1.5 ounces elderflowerliqueur (preferably St. Germain)

2 ounces of Proseco

2 ounces of sparkling water

8 mint leaves, plus more for garnish

2-3 Lime wheels for garnish

Fill a large wine glass right to the top with ice. And don't be shy, it will keep the cocktail colder and your ice will dissolve more slowly. add elderflower liqueur and mint leaves and stir to combine, gently smashing the mint leaves as you stir. But treat the mint with care to prevent bruising which can cause bitterness. Add Prosecco and sparkling water to top. Add several mint sprigs and lime wheels for garnish. Saluti!
